Miller, Jorris spark Monroe Central girls

ST. JOE – A talented Monroe Central squad spoiled Senior Day activities for Bellaire Friday afternoon.

The Lady Seminoles improved to a superb 12-2 on the season via a 10-7 win over the Lady Reds. The victory was triggered by a pair of sparkling hitting performances.

Jadyn Miller and Kennadi Jorris both enjoyed big days with their bats. Miller went 4-4 and also drew a walk. She had an RBI.

Jorris, meanwhile, delivered three hits, including a second-inning home run over the centerfield fence. The talented frosh catcher had three RBI.

Allie McFredrick pitched the first three innings for the Lady Seminoles. She struck out six and walked three. Kamryn Winland tossed the final four innings to earn the pitching win. She fanned three and issued one walk.

“We use the same two pitchers every game in that same fashion,” Monroe Central head coach Paris Yoho noted. “The girls are comfortable with it and it has been successful so far.”

Bellaire dropped to 7-9 on the season despite playing a solid game. The Lady Reds travel to Harrison Central for a twinbill today.

Monroe Central jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. The Lady Seminoles plated three runs in the first inning courtesy of a Jorris RBI single and a two-run double from McFredrick.

The visitors’ two runs in the second came via Jorris’s two-run homer.

Bellaire stormed back with a five-run third inning to knot the affair.

Calleigh Holt doubled, Alexis Dahl singled and frosh Jaela Phillips walked to load the bases. Senior standout Addison Kovach cleared the bases with a grand slam. It was her sixth dinger of the season and 30th career home run in her three-year Lady Reds’ career. She played her frosh campaign at River.

Later in the third frame, Avery Shaver tied the contest with an RBI double.

Monroe Central responded immediately with three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Maclarin Craft ripped a double, plating two teammates while Brylee McFredrick had an RBI single.

Bellaire cut it to an 8-6 deficit in the home-half of the fourth thanks to a walk and two Lady Seminole errors. Monroe Central sealed the deal with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

“We knew Bellaire was going to give us a battle,” Yoho said. “They are much better than their record and they always have a good team.

“The season is going very well so far. We are hitting really well. Our team batting average is around .390,” he added. “What I really like about this team is we are mentally tough. Shenandoah had a 6-0 and our kids kept their composure and battled back to win. We are also really young.”

Senior Marissa Pacifico went the distance in the circle for the Lady Reds. She turned in a fine effort but was hurt by a leaky defense. She struck out five and walked four.

“We just committed too many errors,” Bellaire head coach Dave Menendez offered. “Marissa pitched a fine game. We didn’t make the plays behind her that we are capable of making.

“We have had too many games like this. Our record should be much better than it is,” he continued. “I wish we could have won for our seniors today. It is a good class for girls. We will miss them.”

Holt led the Bellaire attack, reaching base on all five of her plate appearances. She had a single, double and walked three times.

Monroe Central swings back into action this morning, hosting Cameron in a doubleheader.
