WHEELING — It may be months since the High School Golf season, but amateur linksmen are still competing this spring, with several players hailing from Wheeling Park High School making waves.
Wheeling Park’s Andrew Pennybacker and Seth Weidner both qualified for the WV Junior Match Play Championships, held next week at Parkersburg Country Club, with their performances at Sunday’s second and final qualifier at Green Hills Country Club in Fairmont.
Pennybacker tied for second at the qualifiers with a 74 on the Par-70 course. Weidner finished in ninth with a 78. The top nine scores qualified.
This will be Pennybacker’s fourth time advancing to Match Play at the event.
Wheeling Park’s Will Koegler and John Marshall’s Drew Marling both narrowly missed the cut, finishing at 80 strokes.
The qualifier was not the only event local competitors had on their minds though. On Monday, the first qualifier of the 107th West Virginia Amateur Championship saw the top 21 finishers move onto the championship field. The qualifier was held at Bridgeport County Club.
Wheeling Park’s Campbell Koegler finished tied for eighth, shooting an 80 on the Par-72 course, while Will Koegler finished at an 83.
