Safeguarding Coal Jobs
West Virginia coal companies pay all the state taxes any other business does — income, property, unemployment, workers compensation, etc. However, West Virginia imposes an extra coal tax on the industry.
The result of the West Virginia coal tax is that power plants purchase coal from other states. West Virginia power plants burn out-of-state coal. That doesn’t make any sense.
Relief from the coal tax would address this problem and protect thousands of jobs in the process. HB 3142 in the Legislature would lower the coal tax to make West Virginia competitive with other states.
