B&O Building Renovation Benefits Wheeling

For more than a century, the B&O Building has stood in Wheeling, first as a center of travel, now as a center of education. It’s importance can’t be understated. And it’s importance was made evident Tuesday with the rededication of the building on the campus of West Virginia Northern Community College. Both local and state officials, including Gov. Patrick Morrisey, were in attendance to celebrate more than $2 million in renovations to the historic structure. “This building represents more than just bricks and mortar,” WVNCC President Daniel Mosser said to the assembled ...

Reporter's Notebook: Republican Street Fight

Last week, I noted how shocked I was by the sheer amount of spending by political action committees and independent expenditure committees in statehouse races for this primary period. As I reported last week, just five groups had spent more than $1.6 million in a 30-day period between March and April 22. Well, a mere one week later and those same five groups have spent more than $2.6 million. So, in the span of a week, these groups increased their spending by $953,709 – nearly $1 million in just seven days. The five groups in this total include Americans for Prosperity, Sugar ...

Stay Calm And Vigilant Dealing With Scammers

Decent people are assaulted regularly by scammers attempting to gain their personal information, their money, and usually, both. A new round of scam attempts has taken things up a notch by including the state seal of West Virginia in its attempt. Law abiding citizens are used to being able to believe that if something comes with that kind of official imagery, they should pay attention. And because they ARE the kinds of people who want to do the right thing, they are more likely to fall for attempts by those who would prey on their sense of responsibility by using state seals, bank logos ...

Help West Virginia Working Mothers

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, but WalletHub gave West Virginia working moms nothing that could be construed as a gift. The website recently released its 2026 list of the best and worst states for working moms. West Virginia found itself near the bottom of that list. In a ranking of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Mountain State was a dismal 44th. In seven categories, West Virginia finished in the bottom half of the country in six of them. The only category where it finished better than the 50th percentile was the quality of its day cares, where it ranked ...

Congratulations To Local WVU Foundation Scholars

Two Northern Panhandle high school seniors recently provided a shining example of what an education in this region can produce. Wheeling Central senior Liam Kruse and John Marshall senior Sarah McBee have been named two of the five 2026 West Virginia University Foundation Scholars, the university announced this week. The Foundation Scholarship is the most prestigious the university awards to incoming freshmen each year. Valued at more than $100,000 total, the Foundation Scholarship covers college costs for four years of undergraduate studies, including tuition and fees, room and ...

Cheering Champions Of Our Children

The children of the Ohio Valley are among our most precious resources, if not the most precious. Their safety is paramount. And during April’s Family Strengthening and Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Ohio County Family Resource Network has honored four individuals for their work caring for those children. The Deborah Doleski Allen Champion of Children awards recently were handed out with four members of the community being lauded for their endeavors in supporting children. “This team is just a partial representation of the dedicated service providers and community members all ...
