Dr. Wilfredo and Martha Tiu celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 19.

They were united in marriage June 19, 1965 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pittsburgh by the Rev. Edward Hennessey.

Martha Tiu was born on the South Side of Pittsburgh. She put herself through nursing school and worked as a pediatric nurse at Mercy Hospital, where she met her future husband.

Wilfredo Tiu was born in Cebu, Philippines, and worked at his family bakery before attending medical school. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1967 and immediately started residency training in ear, nose and throat surgery.

After completing residency, the couple moved to Wheeling, where Wilfredo Tiu started his practice in ear, nose and throat surgery. After 48 years, he remains in private practice.

They are the parents of five children. The family includes James and his wife, Shawna; Patrick and his wife, Trudy; Maria Rodell and her husband, Mike; Christopher and his wife, Dana; and Jeremy and his wife, Melissa. They have 13 grandchildren.

The couple will celebrate with a special luncheon given by their children today, Aug. 2.
