Wheeling YWCA to Host Inaugural Redhead Fest

WHEELING — The Wheeling YWCA is bringing a colorful event to the area — the Ohio Valley’s first Redhead Festival.

The festival will be held from noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the YWCA, 1100 Chapline St., Wheeling.

The Redhead Festival has multiple goals: to set a Guinness Book of World Records for the most natural redheads in one place, and to raise skin cancer awareness that plagues a large number of redheads.

“This is the first of its kind in the quickly growing and expanding Ohio River Valley and we are expecting large numbers of redheads attending,” said Ron Scott, program director, cultural diversity and community outreach for the YWCA.

“The proceeds made during this event will be used to help funding for programs targeting bullying directed at redheaded children and youth.”

In addition to the Guinness Book attempt, the festival will include:

∫ Highland Games (shot put and tug-o-war)

∫ Redhead related products for sale.

∫ Dermatologist booth for pre-screenings for skin cancer/sunscreen samples

∫ Children’s activities (face painting and games)

∫ Contests for attendees (Redhead that traveled the farthest for event, most freckles in a 1-inch square)

∫ Stop the Redhead Bullying info table

∫ Scottish/Irish History of Immigration to the United States presentation.

Scott said, “So, if you aren’t busy and have a few hours to kill on Saturday, Nov. 2, swing by the YWCA and learn a little about a pocket of people that may be a little different than your own.”
