Duo to Appear At Local Music Club

BETHLEHEM — Suzanne McCormick and Ken Cover will perform for the Thursday Music Club at The Gathering Place at Woodview at 11 a.m. Thursday. Sponsors are Martha Haigwood and Kathryn Wallington.

Cover is a musician, a high school math teacher in Ohio County and a member of the Gideons International. He is a past member of two pep bands a trumpet player. He is a bsuy volunteer at Warwood United Methodist Church.

In 1960, Cover was the organist at Warwood Christian Church where his father was the minister. McCormick sang in their choir at that time before heading off to college.

In 2010, they met up again when Cover was the organist and choir director at Warwood United Methodist Church and asked McCormick to join the choir. They have performed at local AARP meetings for the past six years and at the church.

McCormick was a kindergarten and second-grade teacher in Ohio County before retirement, but singing is her passion. She performed in many variety shows in the Ohio Valley from 1970 to 2000. She sings the National Anthem for the Warwood Lions Club’s summer festival.

She is a member of the Woman’s Club of Wheeling, Ohio County Association of Retired School Employees, AARP and Thursday Music Club and its chorus.

Their performance for the Thursday Music Club will feature songs from Broadway musicals and spiritual music.

President Geri Sloane will conduct a short business meeting.

Member Judi Porterfield will cater a luncheon; reservations are required. There is a fee for the lunch. To make a reservation, call Emily Mayer at 304-232-1714 by Monday.

Bobbi Lander and Suzie McCormick will greet members and guests. Linda Dormas, Christine Gronell, Valerie Lakios and Frances Sokos are in charge of table decorations.

The study group will meet at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1409 Chapline St., Wheeling, at 1 p.m.. Nov. 11. McCormick will be the presenter and Lottie Durbin will serve as hostess. For more information, call chairman Lynn Welsh at 304-277-4730.

The club’s chorus practices at Elm Grove United Methodist Church, 125 Kruger St., Wheeling, from 10 a.m. until noon every Wednesday. Anita Chops is the director and Debbie Breiding is the accompanist. The chorus will present a Christmas concert for the Thursday Music Club’s Dec. 5 luncheon. The group also will perform at WesBanco’s at Elm Grove office on Dec. 6 and at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling on Dec. 16. For more information, call Chops at 304-242-1455.
