Jenny Wilson Trio Performs During Festival of Trees

WHEELING — Experience big city jazz shows in Wheeling.

Some of the region’s top jazz artists perform at Oglebay Institute’s Stifel Fine Arts Center on select Saturdays throughout the year.

Crowd-pleasing performers, expert showman and award-winning song stylists entertain crowds in the elegant, yet intimate, splendor of one of Wheeling’s grand properties.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, the Jenny Wilson Trio, a jazz ensemble focusing on original music as well as choice classic and contemporary standards, will perform at 8 p.m.

The show takes place during Oglebay Institute’s Festival of Trees and Holiday Art Show and Sale. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and remain open until 11 p.m. Come early and stay late to browse and shop before and after the concert.

Jenny Wilson is a composer, pianist, flutist and vocalist. Originally from Queens, New York, she is a graduate of West Virginia University’s master of music jazz pedagogy program and has toured in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Her composing, warm vocal style and articulate piano playing have earned her a fulltime career in music performance. She is also juried Tamarack visual artist and has been selected as one of West Virginia’s best emerging painters.

Bassist Nathan Wilson is Jenny’s husband and also performs with the Squonk Opera from Pittsburgh. He is especially attuned to the melodic style of playing that gives duo their signature sound. Nathan recently performed at the REACH Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and is busy doing recording, mixing and sound reinforcement for festivals in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Saxophonist Curtis E. Johnson is a member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra and is an instructor at WV Wesleyan and Carnegie Mellon University. He has performed as a soloist with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Johnson is also a renowned R&B and jazz performer.
