Finding Comfort in the Kitchen

Jody Miller’s cookie making is picture-worthy.

These past few weeks of at-home sharing time in the bosom of our families has brought about some unexpected benefits. A sampling of local readers tells me that you have been pulling out those dusty cookbooks and handwritten recipes from generations of cooks now gone to their heavenly rewards.

I can hear the clanging of pots and pans and measuring spoons. Perhaps you have rediscovered that pressure cooker or air fryer you got for Christmas and stuck on a shelf in the pantry. Whatever your method of choice, it’s clear we are all looking for some comfort — in the kitchen.

And it’s not such a bad thing. Nothing brings people together more than a cheesy lasagna, a plate of chocolate chip cookies or just a big batch of popcorn to enjoy while binge-watching a favorite TV series.

Let me share what some of you have been doing in the kitchen.

Paula McNinch Doyle said, “Nothing better than chicken noodle soup for what ails ya, physically and mentally!!! Mmm good!!!”

Celeste Diehl also enjoys a big batch of satisfying carbs as she said chicken and noodles are the way to go. Retired educator Judy Stechly said she made a batch of “Grandma’s old-fashioned cookies.” Judging by the number of cookies she made, Judy will be sharing with her grandchildren.

Nini Zadrozny may be known for her stylish boutique — Nini’s Treasures at The Highlands — but when she’s in the kitchen she doesn’t mind donning the apron. She recently whipped up a healthy leftover grilled chicken salad with lots of veggies. Good job, Nini.

Kelsey Clough also said she was thinking a little healthier when making a frittata with bacon, sweet potatoes and fresh veggies and crescent rolls on the side. “Have to get the veggies in the kids somehow,” she commented. She also has been having gazpacho for lunch.

Speaking of kids, I can’t leave out my littlest grandchildren. Hannah, 5, and Deacon 4, Ziegler have been cooking alongside their parents. Friday nights are reserved for homemade pizza making. They have learned to roll out the pizza dough with one of Great-Grandma Hammie’s old rolling pins. Their dad, Jamie Ziegler, has bragging rights for his smoked salmon with peach pepper jam.

Jill Buono is giving her air fryer a workout. She found comfort in pork chops in the air fryer, home- made scalloped potatoes and fresh asparagus. Esther Hall said her husband has been using the slow cooker to whip up a delicious meal of sauerkraut, ribs and Polish sausage.

Carb-laden foods appear to be making the top of many cooks’ dinner menus. Melody Dawn Fisher treated her hubby with roasted chicken, carrots in a cream sauce, mashed potatoes and homemade biscuits. Melody gets extra kudos for making her biscuits from scratch.

Cindy Petri Dailer said macaroni salad and deviled eggs make her family happy. Martha Jane Blizzard White makes mouths water with her turkey pot pie with fresh veggies, herbs, gravy and pie crust. “Comfort food is what it’s all about,” Martha commented.

Thomas John embraces his Lebanese roots and says making meat pies makes him happy. Also shrimp and sauteed veggies and tabbouleh salad are on his table.

Sara Blizzard Robinson said she’s trying to “keep it healthy.” She enjoys a meal of smoked sausage and potatoes with chopped garlic and leek, and plenty of kale, with a side dish of cornbread. “Pass the Tabasco sauce,” Sara added.

Jody Miller’s kitchen looked like a bakery with dozens of cookies lining her counters. However, Sarah Miller said she finds comfort in pizza rolls.

Marilyn Roberts said lots of soups and salads are on her menu. She especially likes quinoa salad and Mediterranean bean salad. Her twin sister, Carolyn Ziegler said scrambled eggs are real comfort food. She and husband Danny are planning to make some shrimp gumbo. The couple’s daughter Abi Ziegler Givler dug out her grandmothers’ recipes: Grandma June’s chicken pot pie and Grandma Socha’s poppy seed cake and cabbage and noodles. The couple’s daughter-in-law Angie Ziegler said stuffed shells with chicken, cheese, and broccoli with alfredo sauce are a hit in her house.

Let’s not forget about dessert. JoAnn Davis has been whipping up cheesecakes for her grandchildren. Now wouldn’t that be a great thing to find on your front porch? Michelle Blum said her go-to is peanut butter sandwiches while binge-watching TV.

Teacher Holly Lanich Gibson found time to bake some goodies. Banana nut bread and a decadent Texas sheet cake are keeping smiles on everyone’s faces. Holly’s sister Leticia Fournier said, “All this baking has created a yeast shortage!”

Leslie Dellget Starkey said she’s addicted to jumbo lump crab cakes. Kathleen Huff-Rohrig and hubby Rob are enjoying vegetable soup and homemade bread.

For MaryJo Gray Klempa homemade lasagna and a salad are comfort foods. Laura Weber said she’s been making homemade alfredo sauce and using it on everything from angel hair pasta to grilled chicken thighs to fettuccine with broccoli and shrimp. Janet Young Gordon said baked ham, scalloped potatoes and fish on Fridays are comfort foods for sure.

My brother, Jon Hamm said he’s been making pizza from scratch and tops it with cold, shredded cheese in an effort to replicate Patsy’s Pizza in Elm Grove.

He and his wife Trish also enjoy teriyaki chicken over rice. My oldest sister Marilyn Mull keeps her comfort food simple — Cream of Wheat with raisins.

My youngest sister Gretchen Linn has kept her family happy with pepperoni rolls, chicken noodle soup and omelets for lunch. She also tried mini pizzas with veggies on Naan bread.

My sister K.C. Demor said she tried sesame beef tacos, chicken pineapple quesadillas and vegan chocolate chip cookies. Another sister Denny Seckman has been knocking out lasagnas she shares with her family members and a best friend on a drive-by, leave on the porch basis.

If all of these food favorites have your tummies growling, don’t forget the many restaurants in the Ohio Valley that are still offering pick-up and delivery services. It’s important to patronize them as much as we can. And there are no dishes to wash!
