Isaac Zane and White Indians Book Talk Comes to Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library

Fitzpatrick

MOUNDSVILLE — “The Untold Story of Isaac Zane: White Eagle of the Wyandots” by local author and historian Alan Fitzpatrick will be discussed at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 11, at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library.

The latest book by Fitzpatrick is the third book in his trilogy written about the little-known history of white captives taken prisoner by Native Americans during the frontier wars of the latter part of the 18th century.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place on the main floor of the library.

For more than 230 years, historians have written about Indians with racial prejudice, refusing to believe that white people would choose to live with “merciless heathen savages.” Fitzpatrick meticulously debunks the false claims in American archives surrounding Isaac’s life, uncovering the authentic story from Wyandot research sources. Fitzpatrick will share his insights into how hundreds of adopted and assimilated captives of Native Americans never came back. A question-and-answer period will be included.

Fitzpatrick is a founding member of Wheeling’s premier heritage event, Fort Henry Days, that commemorates the “last battle of the American Revolution” in 1782 at Wheeling’s Fort Henry. Born in Saskatchewan, Fitzpatrick lived in Canada until moving to the United States at the age of 15.

His previous books include “Wilderness War on the Ohio: The Untold Story of the Savage Battle for British and Indian Control of the Ohio Country During the American Revolution” (2003, 2005), “Place of the Skull: The Untold Story of Wheeling’s Earliest History” (2014), “The White Indians” (2016) and “Captives and Kin in the Ohio Country” (2020).

Copies of “The Untold Story of Isaac Zane” and a selection of Fitzpatrick’s earlier books will be available for purchase and signing after his presentation.

This event has been sponsored by the Robert Baker Family.
