The Marshall County Board of Education’s free summer meal program for children will kick off June 1.

The federally funded program provides free meals for children ages 18 and younger at three different sites this summer:

– From June 1-23, John Marshall High School will host breakfast from 9-9:30 a.m and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday;

– From June 19-Aug. 4, meals will be available at Grand Adventures Leadership Camp at Grand Vue Park, Monday- Friday; breakfast is from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

– From June 21-July 21, meals will be available at the Gateway Achievement Center, 37 Oak Ave., Moundsville, Tuesday-Thursday, with breakfast from 8-8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

During a recent board of education meeting, Superintendent Shelby Haines said there are a number of children and families that take advantage of the program.

“We will make sure that our students are fed,” she said.

She said during the summer at JM the students who are there for credit recovery and summer physical education credits will also be fed.

She said children attending the summer camp at Grand Vue take advantage of the free meals, along with children attending a summer program at the Gateway Center.

“We often do have families that come into those for food,” she said.

Regarding the camps at Grand Vue, Haines said the school district provides some funding to allow the students to attend. Transportation is also provided now and has increased attendance during the camp.

“There are tutors up there and counselors up there,” she added. “It’s a great opportunity for our kids.”

Registration for the camp is open at grandvuepark.com.
