Burl “Buck” Barr, 97, of Coburn, WV went to join his beloved wife Leora on October 9, 2018.
Born in Coburn, WV on November 2, 1920 and raised in the hills of West Virginia, Buck was a man of the earth, taking care of the land, teaching his grandchildren to hunt foxes and ride horses, and most recently, loving his dog “Pup”. Buck and his late wife of 64 years, Kathryn Leora (Long) Barr were known for their hospitality, their late night chicken cookings and their fourth of July Hog Roast, where family and friends who might as well have been family gathered each year.
Buck was a Private First Class in the United States Army, where he traveled to the Galapagos Islands, served in Austria during World War II, was involved in liberating Mauthausen concentration camp. After his service in the Army, he was a farmer, horse trader, and retired from Ormet Corporation.
Buck is survived by three sons and three daughters: David and his wife Susan and their children Michael Barr, Adam Barr, and Jill Price and her husband Eric; Dan Barr and his children Aaron and his wife Bonnie and their children, Caroline and Brooks, Mary Alice Dailey and her husband Brian and their daughter Leora, Michelle Morgan and her husband Matt and their children, Gracelynn and Reese, and Ashley Hess and her husband Jeremy and their son, Braden, and a granddaughter, Agnes Varnum; Nick Barr and his children, Gena Long and her husband Steve and their children, Jeffrey and Mackenzie, Chris Barr and his fiance Wilson Sayre, and Annie Sanders and her husband Justin; Mary Stewart and her husband John and their children Heather Stewart, Jess Stewart and his wife Jennifer and their daughter Maggie, and Amy Stewart; Kathryn Barr and her children, Cynthia Willis and her husband Andy and their child, Olivia, and Chanel Jefferson and her son, Bentley; Leora Kay Newlon and her children, Katie Minutelli and her daughter Sophia and Louie Newlon, son-in-law Fred Conti and daughters Colleen Conti and Jeanette Conti, and Amanda Barr and her daughter, Caramia Walls. He is survived by three brothers; Merle “Slick” Barr and his wife, Jean, Ray “Doc” Barr and his wife Daisy, Don Barr and his wife, Rose, his sister-in-law, Audrey, in-laws Jim Smith, Donna (Long) Greathouse and her Husband Arnie, Sue (Long) Chahoc and her husband Ed. He is also survived by longtime friends Bird Craig and Judy Wadsworth as well as many who weren’t born into the Barr family, but who were made to feel like family.
Buck was preceded in death by his loving wife, Leora (Long) Barr, his parents, John and Mary Isabella (Utt) Barr, his daughter, Christina Conti and his grandson, Tony Barr. He is also preceded in death by his siblings, Margaret Efaw and husband Gilbert, Helen Rice and husband Glenn, Vern Barr and wife Nora, Artie Efaw and husband Herb, Daye Parks and husband Lewis, Archie Barr, Bae “Gouge” Barr and wife Ruby, and sister-in-law Kay Smith.
