Trail Network Will Benefit Our Region
Many of us understand just how beneficial the area’s trail network is to our overall health and well-being. Now, through legislation championed by Delegate Erikka Storch, R-Ohio, and passed through both chambers of the Legislature, that network also could lead to a direct benefit to our region’s economy.
House Bill 3147, which is awaiting Gov. Jim Justice’s signature to finalize the legislative process and become law, creates the Upper Ohio Valley Trail Network and a recreation authority to oversee and guide it actions.
The bill calls for the state to work with other states to connect West Virginia’s trails with those in Ohio and Pennsylvania. There also is a hope that this could be the spark to create a broader Ohio River Trail network that would span multiple states.
“I have been contacted by several vested parties excited to see the bill,” Storch said. “They seem to have plans, and (this legislation will allow us) to move forward as a coordinated effort.”
Along with the health benefits, that effort could see increased economic activity in our region through more visits and overnight stays as travelers stop in the area.
“We have seen a great deal of return on dollars invested into tourism. There is an interest in working to provide those tourism opportunities, and to maximize on the dollars,” Storch said.
One starting point that is being investigated is connecting trails in West Virginia and Ohio at the Aetnaville bridge. That would require an investment from West Virginia officials, as the bridge currently is closed and blocked to all traffic due to safety concerns.
This is a great start to something that truly could be special for our region. Storch deserves thanks for backing this bill.
