Wheeling city officials’ discussion of solving the flooding problems in the Elm Grove neighborhood couldn’t have come soon enough. Anytime there’s a hard rain, there’s a risk of waters coming onto the roadways — and sometimes coming into neighborhood businesses. Free Health Clinic Is A Wonderful Service

After Samaritan’s Purse arrived in Ohio County last year to help those affected by the devastating and fatal flooding in the area, the organization knew it wanted to come back. And it did return just a little more than a year later, holding a free medical, dental and vision clinic in partnership with Newbridge Church throughout the weekend at WesBanco Arena. There is no income requirement. No health insurance or ID is required. The Highlands Continues Attracting Businesses

The last thing Ohio County needs is another empty, unused building, especially one that was built in the last few years. That’s why it was good to see that the former Guntry site at The Highlands likely will soon have a new occupant. Midwest Shooting Center, an Ohio-based company with sites stretching from Pennsylvania to South Dakota, has added a Wheeling, West Virginia, site to its website under the banner of “Coming Soon.” A Facebook page has also popped up, including a link to apply for jobs. Consider Adopting Pets

A full house at the Ohio County Animal Shelter means an less expensive road toward finding a new pet for the household. There currently are 22 dogs and 25 cats at the shelter, and in an effort to find those animals new families, the shelter is offering a 50% discount on adoption fees through the end of August. The normal $160 fee to adopt a dog is currently $80. The normal $60 fee to adopt a cat is currently $30. Those fees also include having the animal spayed or neutered. There is nothing wrong with opposing Silicon Foundation’s proposed data center and energy technology campus in Warwood. There is nothing wrong with questioning the company’s plans, challenging its claims or demanding answers from Wheeling City Council. In fact, residents should do all of those things. But there is a right way to participate in the public process. What happened at Tuesday’s City Council meeting crossed that line. Local Test Scores Still Not Where Need to Be

The latest round of assessment test scores for West Virginia students were released on Wednesday, and as expected, there were no real gains from the previous school year. Across the state, only 48% of students tested proficient in reading, 39% in math, and 29% in science. That’s not even close to being good enough. Locally, Ohio County saw 58% of its students proficient in reading, 48% in math and 35% in science. Marshall County had 46% proficiency in reading, 41% in math and 29% in science.
