Editor, News-Register: Recently, I had the distinct privilege to chat with one of Wheeling’s finest individuals, Tom “Bear” Bechtel. I was attending my two youngest granddaughters’ softball game (eight years of age and younger) at the I-470 ballfields. Editor, News-Register: I would like to publicly thank Wetzel County education Superintendent Cassandra Porter for coming into our county and tackling a problem that should have been tackled years ago. Everyone in this county has known for years that the education our kids are receiving in this county is not as good as it should be. A Magical Place in City’s History

Editor, News-Register: I may be the only person in Wheeling who will miss the Ihlenfeld Dining Room at Oglebay. It was the only place in Wheeling that served as a reminder of what a beautiful dining experience could be like. Jackets were required for the men, nice dresses and the like for the women. There were no shorts, no flip-flops, and no ball caps. I considered it a very romantic place for special times and occasions to remember. Standing Tall for What is Right

Editor, News-Register: Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 23 years ago, was one of the saddest, most horrific days in our country’s history — probably since Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. A total of 2,977 people died in the plane crashes that day as a result of the men who came here, haters of America. But that’s not the total casualty list. Did you know that more than 6,343 of the public and first responders have died as a result of their exposure to dust and poisonous vapors, which also would have included those in the Twin Towers and the residents of surrounding areas in Manhattan? ...

Trump as his vice presidential running mate is most curious and somewhat troubling indeed. Time to Clean Interstate Drains

Editor, News-Register: The West Virginia Division of Highways built brand new bridges and ramps, and now look: every drain is plugged with dirt, and grass is growing alongside the interstate. With plugged drains you have ponding water, which causes hydroplaning and wrecks. All it would take is two nights a month, with a vac-truck, a dump truck and a few workers, and the DOH could clean all the ramps and bridges in and around Wheeling. It’s a shame it’s come to this so soon after the work that was completed. All the DOH big-shots should be fired. J. Myers Wheeling
