GLEN DALE — The John Marshall soccer team dropped its first game of the season Monday with a 9-3 setback against visiting St. Clairsville.
The Monarchs surrendered four goals and allowed 18 shots on goal in the first half and only managed six shots themselves.
For the game, John Marshall was outshot 29-16. St. Clairsville also netted three goals in less than three minutes early in the second half to turn a 5-0 lead into a solid 8-0 advantage.
“I thought we started the game strong but we were unlucky on several shots that bounced off the post,” Monarchs coach Jesus Marin said. “We saw that we could compete with them but once we started making mistakes, it went downhill. We have to learn from our mistakes, pick up the pieces and take it from there.”
St. Clairsville was led by its senior leader Jordan Vincent who tallied three first-half goals before leaving just before halftime with a twisted ankle. He returned in the second half to deliver a bullseye pass to teammate Guillaume Weimer on the opposite side of the field, and headed the ball into the back of the net for the play of the game.
“Jordan does what Jordan does,” Red Devils coach Gary Watt said. “He is fast, deceptive with his first move and he creates space with a burst of energy that is tough to keep up with.
”He can score with either foot and he did exactly what we expect him to do.”
St. Clairsville sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Davenport also impressed with five saves, which kept the hosts scoreless early on and might have been the difference in the game.
“Ryan gets better during every practice and in every game,” Watt said. “We have a ton of confidence in him. He is quite a kid and he played very well.”
In the net for John Marshall was Walker Postle, who stopped 10 of the 29 St. Clairsville shots.
The Red Devils got the scoring started with 34:53 left in the half when Bailey Balcar found Vincent for his first goal.
Vincent then came through again with 23:32 remaining in the half when he handed out an assist to Weimer, who recorded a hat trick in the game.
Vincent finished off the first half with two more goals on two assists by Daniel Gross to give the Devils a 4-0 edge at the break.
Five minutes into the second half, Kyle Hendershot lined up for a free kick for St. Clairsville and drilled it passed the Monarchs goalkeeper to extend the lead to 5-0.
That is when the visitors caught fire with goals from Weimer, Vincent and Balcar in a three-minute span on assists by Vincent and two from Hendershot to give St. Clairsville an 8-0 lead.
Ethan Banks came in to replace Davenport in the second half and recorded three saves for St. Clairsville.
John Marshall tallied its first goal with 26:45 to go in when Justin Mencer scored the first of his two to put the Monarchs on the board.
St. C answered with Weimer’s third goal with 20:54 to go on an assist by Jimmy Lodi but JMHS netted the final two goals coming from Riley Glines and another from Mencer.
Jacob Varner, Joseph Lucey and Glines each recorded assists for the Monarchs.
“We have a strong team but this was a learning experience for us,” Marin said. “Last year our goalkeeper graduated and Postle stepped up for us but he is still learning the position. Every time we step on the field it is a learning experience for them and for me not just in soccer, but in life as well. They are learning how to be leaders.”
Both St. Clairsville and John Marshall move to 1-1.
