Wheeling Post 1 Goes Undefeated During South Carolina Tournament

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Wheeling Post 1 went 3-0 in its trip to the Palmetto American Legion Tournament over the weekend to raise its record to 12-3 heading into tonight’s Area One battle at Moundsville.

After defeating Horry County, S.C., on Wednesday and getting rained out Friday, Wheeling swept a pair of Saturday contests, including a rout of Ohio Valley rival St. Clairsville Post 159.

Wheeling 10, St. Clairsville 1

At Socatese High School, Post 1 banged out 11 hits and scored four runs in the third and three in the seventh to hand Post 159 its first loss in 11 outings.

Leadoff hitter Alex Taylor led the offensive assault with three singles and a double that drove in a run. Jaxson Murray and Dillion Wilson each singled twice and knocked in a pair, while Andrew Skadra doubled in two more.

Jack Selmon earned the win on the mound with five innings of 5-hit ball. He struck out six and walked four.

Hunter Hoffman singled twice and drove in the lone run for St. Clairsville. Jake Heatherington took the loss.

Wheeling 12, Hamburg, Pa., Reds 4

Once again Post 1 collected 11 hits, but also took advantage of a dozen walks, six errors and a pair of hit batsmen by the Reds.

Wilson, the No. 9 hitter, singled thrice and drove in two runs as Post 1 tallied four times in the sixth and added two more in the seventh. Taylor knocked in two with a single and double. Murray added a two-run double.

Quinn Jamison went six innings on the hill, allowing four hits, striking out four and walking a like number.

SUNDAY

St. Clairsville 5, Ottawa 4

Post 159 bounced back with a 12-hit attack — all singles — in its first game of the day as five different players, including the 6-9 batters in the order, who all collected two hits each. They were Evan White, Zach Vickers, Kaden Banal and Tyler Stottlemyre. Leadoff hitter Lucas Heatherington joined the list. White, Banal, Stottlemyre and Heatherington all drove in runs.

Ayden Ludolph got the win with four innings of 5-hit ball. He fanned five and allowed four free passes.

St. Clairsville 8, Greenville 2

Post 159 improved to 12-1 as it scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings before tacking on four more in the sixth to rally from a 2-0 deficit.

Treston Nemeth belted a three-run homer while the trio of Drew Sefick (2 singles, double), Hoffman (4 singles) and Peyton Blue (3 singles) combined for 10 hits. Each also added an RBI, as did Braylon Blomquist and White.

Nemeth came on in relief and struck out seven in four innings to get the win.
