Just in time for the holiday season, the Ohio County Public Library’s new tool lending library includes a variety of baking and cooking items that can be used to make cookies, cakes and more.

The library’s kitchenware collection includes a tart pans, square cake pans, pie pans, loaf pans, mini loaf pans, rectangular cake pans, round cake pans, spring form cake pans, 3-D train cake pan, 3-D horse cake pan, 3-D dinosaur cake pan, cookie press set and a pasta maker.

Laura Carroll, assistant library director, said since the lending library, aka Library of Things, kicked off the most popular item, to date, has been reading and literacy kits for children.

“We also have probably 30 to 40 board games that have been very popular,” she said, adding there are also video games to checkout as well.

She noted the board games can also be used during the library’s game nights, which are held at 5 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

Much like checking out a book, items from the Library of Things require one to have a library card in good standing. The bakeware and other items can be checked out for the same time as a book, about two weeks. Up to five different items can be checked out at one time.

“We’re excited about it. … We just ask people to clean them and treat them like the regular things you take out,” she said.

In the electronics category, there are still Wi-Fi hotspots that can be borrowed. A new item is a Roku stick already loaded with subscriptions to various streaming services, such as Hulu and Disney.

In the next month or so the library plans to add a sewing machine and a standing mixer for people to borrow.

The majority of the Library of Things items are displayed near the magazine area of the library. Some of the larger and more expensive items are stored, but placards with photos of them are available for people to browse.

In addition to kitchenware, other categories include tools, arts and crafts, technolog, play and science. There is also a separate seed library and video games library.

Starting at $2.99/week.
