The Highlands Brings Traffic And Opportunities to Area

By JOSELYN KING

Staff Writer

TRIADELPHIA — Howard and Seth Posin say Interstate 70 has brought a lot more traffic from Pennsylvania to Howard’s Diamond Center since they moved their store from downtown Wheeling to The Highlands.

They believe the abundance of restaurants there keeps the traffic flowing to the development — or maybe it’s just the plentitude of parking spots.

“There’s no question The Highlands has been an economic boon to the Ohio Valley,” Seth Posin said. “There’s ample parking. There’s no shortage of retailers or places to eat. There’s lot to do.”

Howard Posin agreed. Available parking is a big benefit to businesses at The Highlands. “We had a lot of complaints when we were downtown, but we have no complaints up here,” he said.

While many of the same customers continue to venture from Wheeling and East Ohio to Howard’s location at The Highlands, new patrons from Washington, Pa. and the Pittsburgh area are making their way from the east.

“It’s nice because we’re pulling clientele from Pennsylvania, and it’s easy to find,” Seth Posin said. “That makes a difference.”

The location has opened up their marketing potential.

“When we were downtown, I don’t remember anybody coming in from Washington, Pa. to downtown,” Howard Posin said. “Now we see them every day because it’s only 20 minutes away.

“And a lot of them come here to go to the restaurants and the theatre.”

And having the Marquee Cinemas just across the driveway from their store brings its own share of excitement, according to the Posins.

“It’s fun when they have a grand premiere of a motion picture. It brings in crowds and a lot of traffic,” Seth Posin said. “We’re very happy here.”

And The Highlands is not just about shopping. A multitude of health care offices have located there, as have hotels and a conference center.

Non-retail tenants assure traffic to The Highlands during daytime hours on weekdays when not as many shoppers might turn out to the stores.

Howard’s Diamond Center is located within West Liberty University’s Highlands Center Building within The Highlands development, which is intended as a place for non-traditional students to receive a college education.

“Most people know West Liberty is way out there in the country,” said Savannah Moore, administrative assistant at the WLU Highlands Center. “The satellite campus allows the unconventional students to attend classes, continue their education, get a masters degree and take more classes off West Liberty’s hilltop. It’s just more convenient for the community.

“It provides more opportunities to have a satellite campus, especially in a smaller town such as Wheeling.”
