Excited, Not Euphoric

Editor, News-Register: The dictionary defines the word “excited” this way: “having, showing or characterized by a heightened state of energy, enthusiasm, eagerness, etc.; feeling or showing excitement.” After the recent meeting of a labor caucus in the United States Congress, some union members exclaimed they were “excited.” All well and good. Bridges a Concern

Editor, News-Register: I am most curious as to what may be the future status of the historic Aetnaville Bridge, also known as the Georgia Street Bridge, which originally opened in 1891, connecting Aetnaville, Ohio, with Wheeling Island, West Virginia over the Ohio River. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1988, as a result of “serious structural concerns.” However, the structure remained open for pedestrian traffic until its complete closure in January 2016. Editor, News-Register: Via TV, I watched electors from the Electoral College cast votes in each state. It is heartening to me that the electors stood their ground and are performing their duties as they are sworn to do. Editor, News-Register: As a grandparent, I am concerned about the skyrocketing youth tobacco use rates. More than one in five high schoolers now use e-cigarettes. And we know that kids who use e-cigarettes are more likely to try conventional cigarettes. But there is good news: We know how we can reverse these disturbing trends in West Virginia. Editor, News-Register: As a result of the November presidential election in which former vice-president Joe Biden garnered 306 electoral votes, defeating convincingly the 232 electoral votes of current President Donald Trump, Mr. Biden has earned the title of president-elect.
