High School Roundup: Maroon Knights Top Mohigans; Tigers Defeat Jets In 12 Innings
MORGANTOWN — The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights baseball squad pushed their win streak to 10 Thursday with an impressive 6-2 road win over the Morgantown Mohigans.
Wheeling Central is now 14-3 on the season.
Brady Ernest threw a complete game for Central, earning the win and striking out four. He issued one walk and gave up five hits, only one for extra bases.
Ernest also went 3-3 at the plate and hit a home run, finishing with three RBI out of the three-hole of the Knights’ lineup.
Zayne Rosnick racked up four hits including a double. He scored thrice.
Jake Brown also had two hits out of the leadoff spot.
Kade Koronneos drove in two for the visitors.
Shadyside 4, Union Local 2
MORRISTOWN — In a 12-inning odyssey, The Tigers eventually pushed across two runs in the final frame to bring to an end a game that had nearly double the innings of a normal high school outing.
Leadoff man Damian Russell had two hits and two RBI for Shadyside. Trenton Marling, Aaron Pacifico and Ryan Collins also each had two hits.
Colby Carpenter had a three-hit day for Union Local, including whalloping a double. Kam Gordon drove in two runs, and Eli Rogers doubled.
Union Local took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, before Shadyside tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third. It’d take nine more innings for the tie to be broken.
John Marshall 3, Spring Valley 2
HUNTINGTON — The Monarchs plated one run in the top of the eighth inning to win on the road in extras over the Timberwolves.
Jacob Cisar pitched the full extended outing, going eight innings and striking out three. Both of Spring Valley’s runs were scored as unearned.
Jayden Astipalitis doubled for John Marshall, while Hayden Hughes had a two-hit day.
St. Clairsville 13, Buckeye Local 0
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils blanked the Panthers in a five-inning victory at home Thursday.
Tyler Kosek pitched the shutout and struck out three. He walked three and allowed two hits.
Roby Hanna hit a double and a single for St. C., driving in two runs. Niko Jacob also doubled and drove in two. Landon Stack also doubled and notched an RBI.
Caiden Bailey, Hudson Florence and Matheson King also had two-RBI days for the Red Devils.
Tyler Schubert hit a double for Buckeye Local.
Bridgeport 14, Wheeling Park 3
WHEELING — The Indians took down the Patriots on the road Thursday.
Jaxson Updegraff doubled for the Patriots, while Ossie Hudson, Brody Groome and Rylan Moore each had two singles.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead after two innings before Bridgeport scored three in the top of the third inning to take a permanent lead.
SOFTBALL
Wheeling Central 3, St. Marys 1
WHEELING — The Maroon Knights locked down the Blue Devils for a come-from-behind victory Thursday.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Maroon tied the game in the fourth inning and tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth.
Seneca Heller smacked two doubles for Central, driving in two to lead the Knights’ offense.
Olivia Kiaski took the win inside the circle, allowing just four hits and three walks.
Barnesville 10, Bridgeport 6
BARNESVILLE — The homestanding Shamrocks used a fast start to outrun the Bulldogs in a high-scoring contest.
Barnesville scored four in the first inning and three in the second to push out to a quick lead.
Peyton Loudin hit a home run as part of a two-hit, four-RBI day for Barnesville. She also pitched the final three innings of Thursday and struck out six. Ella Betts doubled twice and singled once while driving in two, and started the game inside the circle, striking out eight in four innings. Abygail Ady tripled and drove in two.
Hanna Brewer struck out seven for Bridgeport and scored three times to aid her offense. Addie Snodgrass hit a doubled for the Bulldogs.
