CHARLES R. ‘CHUCK’ ELSTON

Charles R. "Chuck" Elston, a cherished educator and devout community member, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026, at the age of 83, at Wheeling Hospital Continuous Care Center in his beloved hometown of Wheeling, WV.

Born on December 10, 1942, Chuck dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the nurturing of young minds. As a lifelong educator, he impacted the lives of countless students across Ohio County. His journey as an educator began at Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He later continued his career at Bridge Street Middle School before moving on to Wheeling Park High School.

Outside the classroom, Chuck was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He also enjoyed the camaraderie and skill of shooting as a member of the Lewis Wetzel Rifle and Pistol Club, and proudly supported the NRA.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Flora T. (Yeager) Elston; his brother, Lawrence Elston; and his sister, Mary C. Thornberry. He leaves behind a loving family, including his niece, Rebecca Selmon, and her husband, Robert Jr.; his great-nephews, Andrew and Arin Selmon; as well as numerous cousins and friends who will fondly remember his kindness and warmth.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Chuck's life at a visitation on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 6-8 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Wheeling, WV. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 11, at 11 a.m.a at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, followed by interment at Stone Church Cemetery.
