WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital Moves, Expands Sleep Center
WHEELING — The expanded WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital Center for Sleep Medicine will hold an open house May 24 at its new location, 980 National Road in the former Huntington Bank-Woodsdale building. The open house is scheduled from 4-7 pm and will include tours of the renovated 4,100-square-foot building.
The new facility integrates the former Sleep Lab at Wheeling Hospital into the Center for Sleep Medicine, providing a convenient location for both testing and diagnostic evaluations. Free parking is available on site, providing easier access to testing areas.
The sleep lab has been expanded to six bedrooms, all with queen-size beds. Rooms are accessible for those with disabilities with showers available for patient convenience. The lab is nationally accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). AASM facilities provide the highest level of quality patient care.
Evaluations at the center will be conducted by physicians board-certified in sleep medicine who are trained to treat a broad spectrum of sleep disorders. The center’s state-of-the-art equipment is capable of performing all PSG studies according to AASM guidelines. Testing includes PSG, PSG with continuous positive air pressure (CPAP), bi-level positive air pressure (BiPAP) and Auto Servo ventilation (ASV).
The center also provides clinical diagnostic evaluations and treatment for disorders such as sleep apnea (breathing pauses during sleep), snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, hypersomnolence, nocturnal desaturation, narcolepsy, night terrors, insomnia and restless leg syndrome.
The Center for Sleep Medicine is the only facility in the tri-state area providing screenings for INSPIRE consideration and device follow up. Inspire is the latest treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea patients who are unable to use or get benefit from CPAP.
Inspire therapy works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation keeps the airway open during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. The system consists of a stimulation lead and a breathing sensor, powered by a small battery.
The system is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through three small incisions during an outpatient procedure. The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they wake up. Eliminated is the need for a mask or hose.
The outpatient procedure is performed locally by ENT specialists Dr. Christopher Tiu and Dr. Jeremy Tiu.
At the Center for Sleep Medicine, two physicians, Medical Director Dr. Jasmine Roberts and Dr. Edmond Roberts, are on site to assist patients with their sleep needs and questions. Testing is performed by licensed registered respiratory therapists, who are also registered polysomnographic technologists, to provide the highest quality individualized care to patients. The sleep lab is open seven nights a week from 8:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m. The diagnostic clinic hours are 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Patients must schedule appointments by first visiting their physician. If a sleep disorder is suspected, a referral can be made to the center. Patients seen in the Center for Sleep Medicine will have their total care, from the first examination through follow-up, managed by sleep professionals. Any findings and care provided are promptly relayed to the patient’s physician.
