WHEELING — The City of Wheeling has condemned the McLure Hotel, citing the building as unsafe for occupants.

A notice is posted on the front door of the hotel, which also has apartments in the building. Tenants were forced to vacate the building by noon on Monday.

According to the notice, the city’s building and planning department conducted a recent inspection and found several violations, including issues with the water and plumbing systems, fire safety deficiencies, electrical systems and building security.

According to the notice, necessary repairs need to be made for the violations to be removed. Any and all work done requires a permit and those permits can only be obtained through the city’s building and planning department.

“Part of the permit process is submitting a scope of work plan,” the notice reads. “You are required to contact us within 21 days of receipt of this Notice and Order to schedule an inspection of this entire premises.

“You will be required to complete a scope of work plan within 30 days following the inspection,” the notice continues. “Once the permit is issued, you will be required to commence work within 30 days. This project is expected to be completed within 90 days of the issuance of a permit.”

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department shut down the hotel side of the McLure last week, citing malfunctioning elevators, mold and sewage water spreading onto the floors of the building. The apartment side stayed open at that point, until the city’s building and planning department could conduct an inspection.

On Tuesday, there were several furniture items left in the parking garage attached to the hotel, as well as empty basket trucks used for moving items. All entrances to the building appeared to be locked.

The owner of the McLure was not able to be reached for comment as of Tuesday evening. City officials also could not be reached for comment as of Tuesday evening.

Starting at $2.99/week.
