Will It Never End?

Editor, News-Register: How much more punishment do those who live and work in downtown Wheeling, especially on Main Street between 10th and 16th streets, have to endure? Torn up streets, bad infrastructure, etc. What’s next? Is not the street from 12th to 16th and Main the street that was torn up for some time for underground work, a few years back? God help us if this was a two-way street! Charles Ballouz Wheeling

Suffering Consequences

Editor, News-Register: I must admit that I, as are a great many, am extremely incredulous as to how any reasonable and rational thinking individual would continue to lavish himself with praise and self-adoration as does President Donald J. Trump, as a result of his questionable efforts to combat the current horrific pandemic crisis. In actuality, our great nation, which has 4% of the world’s population, has over 22% of the world’s deaths as a result of COVID-19. It is essentially as a result of his lack of proactive leadership and minimalization of the pandemic that has been ...

Gold Star Families Monument Dedicated at Courthouse

Those in attendance at the dedication of the Marshall County Gold Star Families Memorial Monument this past Wednesday evening had the opportunity to listen to featured speaker Hershel “Woody” Williams explain about the start-up of this effort 10 years ago, what the foundation means, along with the mission the four goals of the project. The mission of the program is to honor, recognize and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their loved ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In addition, while several individuals and organizations took part in the event, others ...

Racism Charge Phony

Editor, News-Register: Is professor Charles Rogerson using state paid for English instruction to indoctrinate impressionable students with his radical political persuasions? In public, he exceeds the president in lack of intellectual discourse. He drags preconceived racism into a political contest that should be debated on opponents’ achievements and intentions. I must weigh President Trump’s terrible temper and other blemishes against what he has accomplished despite a constant barrage of opposition. He has reduced the difference between low- and high-income workers, ...

Swank for Congress?

Editor, News-Register: Isn’t it truly amazing the tear down and reconstruction of our I70 bridge system in West Virginia? I have watched in speechless awe as the team of Swank workers have removed the old system and built up the new. The Fulton area was the most interesting (OK, maybe I am a bit too bored, thanks to the coronavirus.) The support beams were removed, along with the old bridge — steel beams and all. The new support began before the deck above was demolished. Did you see the new steel beams appear? Four at a time were staged and moved into place, a series ...

Leonhardt Grows W.Va. Agriculture

For many years, agriculture was something of an afterthought when the future of West Virginia’s economy was being discussed. No more. Farming and related endeavors now show real promise as part of our economy. Careers in agriculture seem more realistic now. Give state Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt much of the credit for that. His drive to make agriculture commercially viable — rather than merely a hobby for Mountain State residents — is paying off. Leonhardt took office in 2017, after a stint in the state Senate. Prior to that, he had served in the Marine Corps, ...
