Characters Bring Wheeling History to Life

Visitors may view gravesites of Wheeling pioneers and hear stories of early Wheeling from living history interpreters at the Friends of Wheeling historic Greenwood Cemetery Tour on Sunday, Sept. 20. Continuous tours will begin at 1 p.m., with the final tour at 4:30 p.m.

Two free tours, each with seven costumed characters, will be offered, appropriate for all ages. This year’s tour characters include the following:

Tour A

1. Sarah Pannell Wilson (1803-1873) – Wife of steamboat builder William P. Wilson and sister to politically active and Southern-sympathizing Andrew Jackson Pannell. She will be portrayed by Lola Miller.

2. Henry Stifel Schrader (1909-1996) – Lawyer and philanthropist who supported numerous Wheeling organizations, including Oglebay Institute’s Schrader Environmental Education Center. Jay Frey will portray him.

3. Thomas H. Norton (1840-1908) – Union soldier during the Civil War and military mayor of Jackson, Miss., during Reconstruction. Glenn Elliott will portray him.

4. Anna Hartley Little (c.1825-?) – Second wife and stepmother of the surviving children of Arthur Little (1810-1888), who was a wagon manufacturer who produced Civil War ambulances. She will be portrayed by Gael Fincham.

5. Texana Jordan (1884-1966) – Daughter of Judge Lewis Jordan and art director of Wheeling public schools, portrayed by Laurie Ruberg.

6. Stimson H. Woodward (1813-1881) – Ironmaster, co-founder of LaBelle Nail Works and founder of Woodward Iron Co. in Alabama, portrayed by Hal Gorby.

7. Peter Cassell (1830-1912) – Co-founder of Central Glass and a director when the company was accused of counterfeiting with their “coin glass” design. Greg Smith will portray him.

Tour B

1. Sallie Maxwell Bennett (1857-1944) – Daughter of James Maxwell, mother of World War I aviator Louis Bennett and great-grandmother of U.S. Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.). She will be portrayed by Jeanne Finstein.

2. Gertrude Lamb (1842-1913) – Daughter of lawyer Daniel Lamb, one of the founders of West Virginia and a primary author of its constitution. Bekah Karelis will portray her.

3. August Rolf (1828-1918) – Member of the German Rifles militia group and witness to the hanging of John Brown. He will be portrayed by Dave Clutter.

4. Harrison Dunlevy (1849-1916) – Member of the Dunlevy boat-building family and later bridge superintendent in Wheeling before his tragic death. Jeremy Morris will portray him.

5. George Baird (1829-1891) – Medical doctor and Wheeling health officer murdered by colleague Dr. George Garrison. He will be portrayed by Mike Medovic.

6. Nellie Egerter Faris (1876-1973) – Wife of famed, prolific Wheeling architect Frederick Faris. She will be portrayed by Kate Quinn.

7. Lydia Cromwell Hearne (1874-1961) -Homeopathic doctor and community and political activist. Judi Hendrickson will portray her.

Parking is available at Wheeling Park, and funeral home limousines will shuttle visitors back and forth to the cemetery.
